Bold color, expressive texture, and timeless European style define this striking mid-century still life by Dutch-born artist William Stam.
Born in Amsterdam and later studying in Paris and Italy, Stam developed a distinctive modern painting style characterized by richly sculptural impasto and vibrant color. An original biography preserved on the reverse of the painting describes his signature “third-dimension effect,” achieved through exceptionally thick applications of paint.
Executed with confident palette knife work, the composition features richly textured ceramic vessels and fruit set against an abstract, atmospheric background. Layers of sculptural paint catch the light beautifully, giving the surface remarkable depth and movement from every angle.
Its bold texture, sophisticated palette, and strong Mid-Century Modern aesthetic make it equally suited to contemporary, transitional, Scandinavian, or European-inspired interiors.
The painting is housed in a complimentary carved wood frame with warm gilt accents that beautifully complement the artwork without competing for attention.
