Immerse your space in the vivid, luminous beauty of Mid-Century modernist landscape art with this original watercolor painting by celebrated American artist Robert E. Wood, AWS (1926–1999). A preeminent figure in the California Scene Painting movement, Wood was highly celebrated for his expressive, semi-abstracted interpretations of nature. This striking piece beautifully showcases his signature style, using an exceptionally bold palette of deep purples, teals, forest greens, and rich terracotta contrasted against a stand of pale birch trees.
Signature: Hand-signed "Robert E. Wood" in the lower-right corner.
AWS Merit: Carries the prestigious "AWS" designation next to the signature, denoting his membership in the American Watercolor Society (where he was a highly respected exhibitor and member).
Although the watercolor is undated, the “Robert E. Wood A.W.S.” signature and the painting’s highly expressive, semi-abstract treatment are consistent with Wood’s mature California watercolor work of the 1960s.
The painting is housed under glass in a classic, thin-profile mid-century warm wood frame with a generously sized off-white mat board. The wide margin matting beautifully draws the eye inward, letting the rich, saturated colors of the watercolor take center stage.
This piece boasts pristine single-family provenance, inherited directly from the original owner. It has been carefully displayed in a private home, protecting the historically sensitive watercolor pigments from sunlight and preserving their incredible, jewel-tone saturation.
