Few landmarks capture the romance of Paris quite like Notre-Dame, and this charming 1946 oil painting beautifully evokes the quiet elegance of the Seine at day’s end.
Painted on wood panel and signed “Andre” with the date “46,” the composition depicts Notre-Dame Cathedral rising above the river with soft reflections dancing across the water. The artist favors atmosphere over strict architectural precision, using delicate pastel blues, warm blush tones, and muted greens to create a peaceful post-war vision of the city.
One of my favorite details is the wonderfully thin application of paint across the sky, allowing the natural grain of the wood panel to subtly emerge. Rather than distracting, it lends warmth, texture, and authenticity to the piece.
The painting is housed in its original carved giltwood frame with beautifully aged patina, light surface wear, and gentle losses to the gilding that complement the painting’s vintage character.
A timeless Parisian landscape that works equally well in traditional, European, or collected contemporary interiors.
