The nearly four-foot figure is constructed around a solid wooden sculptural core, with modeled gesso or plaster composition applied over portions of the surface to build dimensional details and prepare the figure for its hand-painted polychrome finish. Saint Isidore is shown in traditional rural dress, wearing a long gray coat with gilt-painted trim and buttons, muted trousers, and tall brown boots. The painted plinth is inscribed “St. Isidore.”

The combination of carved wood, modeled composition, gesso, and polychrome decoration is characteristic of traditional European devotional statuary. The applied material gives added depth to the coat, clothing folds, facial features, boots, and other modeled details while the underlying wood provides substantial weight and structural strength.

The figure retains a beautifully aged painted surface with extensive craquelure, rubbing, chips, and scattered losses revealing the gesso and wooden core beneath. His raised hand likely once held a separate agricultural attribute associated with Saint Isidore, now absent.

Despite its timeworn surface, the sculpture is heavy, sturdy, and visually commanding. Its expressive face, muted original-looking palette, and unusual agricultural subject make it a compelling example of antique European religious and folk art. See less
