An exceptional, registered original sumi ink painting on paper by renowned Japanese-American modernist artist Sueo Serisawa (1910–2004).
Dating to 1976, this piece is a standout work from Serisawa’s highly regarded "Idyllwild Series." Captured in traditional Japanese sumi-e (ink wash) style, the painting depicts a dramatic, atmospheric mountain landscape with towering conifers shrouded in mountain mist—a direct reflection of the pine-studded scenery of Idyllwild, California, where Serisawa lived, worked, and taught.
This painting features incredible, unbroken single-family provenance, having been inherited directly from Sylvia. Presented under glass in a narrow black wood frame with wide textured cream matting and a fine gold inner border. The reverse of the frame retains its original paper dust cover, boasting rich historical context with three hand-written inscriptions in pencil and ink:
1. Series Identification: "Idyllwild series / 1976 Sumi ink painting / Sueo Serisawa"
2. Personal Presentation Note: "For the new House / Sylvia + Bill"
3. Personal Signature & Date: "Marsha + Sueo 7/4/84"
A distinctive original work combining Japanese sumi-e traditions, California Modernism and the natural landscape of Idyllwild.
