Rare and elegant pair of five-light candelabra produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden during the 1930s.
These sculptural candelabra are executed in pewter and represent an excellent example of Swedish Grace transitioning into Scandinavian Art Deco. The design combines geometric precision with a restrained decorative sensibility, characteristic of the finest Swedish decorative arts of the interwar period.
Each candelabrum rises from a circular stepped base to a sharply faceted tapered stem, creating a strong architectural presence. The five candle arms extend outward in a rhythmic arrangement of angular curves, terminating in conical candle cups that reinforce the streamlined Art Deco aesthetic. The carefully balanced proportions and sophisticated silhouette exemplify the quality associated with Svenskt Tenn’s early production.
Founded in Stockholm in 1924 by Estrid Ericson, Svenskt Tenn became one of the most influential names in twentieth-century Swedish design. Before the introduction of Josef Frank’s celebrated furniture and textiles, the company gained recognition for its exceptional pewter objects, many of which are now highly sought after by collectors and institutions.
The present pair retains its original pewter finish with a desirable aged patina, enhancing the sculptural quality of the forms. Their understated elegance allows them to function equally well in period interiors and contemporary settings.
A rare opportunity to acquire a matching pair of documented Svenskt Tenn candelabra from the firm’s most collectible early period. This piece has an attribution mark,
