The composition presents a ewe with her lamb in the upper section and a mature ram below, providing a complete study of the breed's appearance, anatomy, and characteristic wool. Beneath the image appears the title *Das Spanische Schaf* ("The Spanish Sheep") together with the scientific designation *Capra Ovis Hispaniae*. The print was created by Swiss artist and natural history illustrator Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862) and published in Lindau in 1816 as part of the celebrated *Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche*.
