Originating from France, the statue is carved from pearwood. Pear is a hard, highly homogeneous wood with a minimal grain pattern, which allowed the academically trained sculptor to execute incredible, delicate details, elevating the piece far beyond common folk art. The sculpture is a monolith, carved from a single solid block of pearwood. Executing such a complex three-dimensional figure, where the musical instrument extends forward into space, required absolute compositional certainty and a significant amount of material. Created during the Romantic and Historicism eras, this piece reflects the 19th-century bourgeois trend of decorating libraries, gentlemen's studies, and parlors with objects invoking the "golden age" of knights and troubadours. Rather than depicting its own period, the statue serves as a romantic retrospective, styling the figure in attire from the Renaissance to early Baroque periods. The sculptor demonstrated a profound understanding of historical costume and anatomy; the figure wears classic Renaissance slashed sleeves and breeches, revealing the underlying fabric, and a richly shaped plumed beret. The masterfully captured drapery is evident in the folding fabric across the torso and the realistic sagging of the high boots around the calves. The musketeer-style beard and mustache are carved with immense precision, and the lutenist's pensive, downward gaze perfectly captures the melancholic atmosphere highly sought after in Romantic art. The musical instrument itself presents an interesting historical detail. While its pear-shaped body and curved back functionally correspond to a lute, it features a visual simplification common in 19th-century historicist sculptures. Traditional lutes typically feature a pegbox angled back at nearly 90 degrees; here, however, the neck ends in a gentle curve with a more modern tuning mechanism reminiscent of a 19th-century romantic guitar. The carver adapted the instrument based on the contemporary designs familiar to him. The sculpture is in its original, beautifully preserved condition, boasting a gorgeous, warm honey patina. The wood is structurally sound and completely free of cracks, proving that the pearwood was perfectly seasoned before carving and that the statue has been kept in excellent conditions. Fine, crisp chisel marks remain visible in the details—particularly on the hands and face—lending a beautiful texture to the surface and proving hand-carving of the highest caliber. This exceptional historical solitaire will make a commanding statement in both classic and contemporary interiors. See less
