A superb mirror from the first half of the 19th century (dating from before 1850), featuring a richly carved wood and stucco frame with Rococo motifs, acanthus leaves, and floral garlands at the four corners. The original gilding has a deep, warm patina.
This mirror retains its precious original mercury glass, which displays a magnificent natural oxidation (characteristic specks and pitting), sought after by collectors and decorators for its authenticity and added character.
The back of the mirror reveals a remarkable original parquet backing with its antique nails, on which a period handwritten label in German remains: "Absender: Schwester Maria Bering — 1 Spiegel, 2 Stühle, 1 kl. Tisch" (Sender: Sister Maria Bering — 1 mirror, 2 chairs, 1 small table), a precious testament to its history.

Condition: Very good overall condition for an object nearly 180 years old. The frame shows slight wear to the gilding, some crazing inherent to antique stucco, and minor restorations. The mercury silvering is attractively oxidized. Perfectly sound and stable. See less
