A striking pair of Dutch watercolour and gouache floral still lifes, signed "F.M. de Spaen née de Bylandt" and dated 1809. Each sheet shows an abundant bouquet of peonies, roses, lilies and hydrangea arranged in a classical urn on a stone ledge, set against a deep blue ground in the Dutch flower-painting tradition. Two centuries of light exposure have softened the original reds and pinks, leaving a refined palette of buff, sage green and Prussian blue that suits both classic and modern interiors. The artist was a noblewoman connected to the intertwined Van Spaen and Van Bylandt families of the Guelders/Cleves border region; research into her exact identity is ongoing. The pair was acquired near Kleve, in the ancestral heartland of both families, from a private Dutch collection. Presented in matching early 20th-century faux-grained, parcel-gilt frames under glass. Fading of the fugitive pigments (reds, pinks and yellows) has occurred over time, now integral to the aesthetic. The paper is stable with no tears or losses.
