Every spring, I look forward to a specific view outside my kitchen window where an old, 30-year-old Weigela shrub bursts into life with the most lovely pink florets. I have always been deeply drawn to its delicate, almost magnolia-like flowers and the rugged, woody structure of its branches. On this specific day, while my studio practice had been heavily focused on quiet fruit and bowl still lifes, I felt an urgent need for a direct hit of nature and the outdoors. I went out, clipped a few twigs from the shrub, placed them in a simple glass cup, and sat down at my easel.
The glass immediately added a beautiful sense of fragility to the setup, and I loved the raw visual contrast of the submerged stems resting in the water. At the time, a painting friend had introduced me to working with a black background—a concept that was completely out of my comfort zone after years of relying on white, patterns, or solid colors. Leaving that dark backdrop up in my studio proved to be incredibly enlightening. It pushed me to look deeper, uncovering a vast array of subtle colors hidden within "black" shapes and heavy shadows.
"Turquoise and Twigs" captures that exact moment of artistic transition for me—finding the delicate balance between the woodiness of the branches, the vulnerability of the glass, and a brand-new way of looking at color and shadow. Painted with vibrant, expressive brushstrokes, the textured canvas surface holds a beautiful, tactile clarity.
This original 10" x 8" oil painting bridges an intimate slice of my daily life with a sophisticated, rich palette of lively pinks, fresh chartreuse, and deep, atmospheric turquoise shadows. It is designed to bring a soulful, organic heartbeat and an elegant layer of story to an intimate entryway vignette, a luxury bookshelf arrangement, or a collected residential gallery wall.
