This impressive stone garden stool is hand-carved from solid marble, designed to add the essential stone element of a traditional Chinese garden. Stone drums such as this were fixtures of courtly gardens and outdoor pavilions, contrasting foliage with the permanence of stone and providing a place to sit and ponder.
The marble stool is sculpted to a classic drum shape, with gracefully curved sides and a border of studs around the seat and base, imitating nails used to stretch hide on an actual drum. Faux ring handles are carved onto the sides in low relief, each "hanging" from lotus-form hardware. Softened to a smooth, matte texture, the marble drum is ideal indoors or out as a side table, pedestal or garden seat.
