This intricate silver necklace was once a part of the elaborate attire of a Miao women in southwest China, an ethnic minority with rich traditions of textile art and silverwork. In the Miao culture, silver is regarded as the most precious of metals and families begin amassing silver jewelry for their daughters at childhood. The weight of a girl's ornaments can range anywhere from several ounces to a few kilograms.
Dated to the early 20th century, the necklace is hand-crafted from silver alloy wire, with one half braided into a tight cord and the other coiled into a graceful half-moon shape. Elevated on a custom steel mount, the antique necklace lives on as a sculptural object with fantastic character.
