Beautifully glazed in the blue-and-white manner, this antique Chinese vessel from the early 20th century was originally used in a Qing-dynasty (1644-1911) kitchen for salt-pickling eggs, vegetables or other foods. The tapered pot is hand-painted with cobalt blue underglaze to a lush scene of birds and peony blossoms. This motif of two birds amid peonies conveys the idiom "may husband and wife grow old together in harmony," making the jar a fitting gift for a wedding or anniversary.
