An exceptional and substantial late-19th-century Italian carved alabaster sculpture depicting The Three Graces (Euphrosyne, Aglaia, and Thalia) embraced in their classic, lyrical composition after the celebrated neoclassical masterpiece by Antonio Canova.
Standing at an impressive 23 1/4 inches tall, this cabinet-sized sculpture is hand-carved from a beautiful, highly select block of beige alabaster characterized by soft, warm honeyed tones, subtle natural veining, and delicate translucent whorls that catch the light beautifully. The top of the base features a wonderfully detailed, hand-incised diaper-pattern tooling typical of Volterra workshops of the era--the world capital of alabaster sculpting..
