Marseille landscape, watercolour, gouache and crayon of the iconic view of Notre Dame des Accoules from the Montee des Accoules by Marguerite Allar. The painting is signed and dated bottom left and is presented in a fine carved, gilded and patinated frame with a gilt edged cut card mount under glass.
Marguerite Allar was from a family of artists and sculptors, most notably her uncle André-Joseph Allar and mother, Angeline Allar. She devoted herself to painting and became a pupil of Jean Patricot. She painted Provençal and Oriental landscapes, as well as portraits (Countess Pastré etc.). from 1928 onwards, she exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris and at regional exhibitions. She also made stained glass windows (Saint-Lucien chapel in Les Goudes in Marseille).
In 1946, she created her own academy on the Old Port at 13 Quai de Rive Neuve where she was the neighbour of the painter François Diana. She taught drawing, painting, art history and decoration. This academy was to become very famous for years and helped to train many young artists. In 1957, she passed the art history competition at the École des beaux-arts in Marseille.
The Notre-Dame-des-Accoules church is a former medieval collegiate church located in the Accoules district of Marseille, razed during the Revolution with the exception of the bell tower, shown in theis painting, which is now classified as a historical monument. In 1820, a crypt and a Calvary were built in front of the back wall of the destroyed church. from 1824, a new church was built to the right of the Calvary. This piece has an attribution mark,
