This iconic set was designed in the 1970s by the celebrated Dutch designer Jan des Bouvrie for Gelderland Design (Netherlands).This specific set features the highly sought-after early 5-button tufted design on the backrest, giving it that ultimate voluminous, high-end 1970s look.

The original mauve/pinkish textured fabric upholstery complements Hollywood Regency, Mid-Century, and eclectic interiors beautifully.Both the lounge chair and the ottoman feature the iconic heavy-gauge tubular chrome frame with the signature floating circular swivel base.

The chrome is in great condition with a beautiful shine, and the swivel mechanism rotates smoothly.

PS: This chair is not a fake or replica, but a fully authentic variant. The presence of 5 buttons (a 'quincunx' pattern with one button in the center and four surrounding it) instead of 4 buttons is a known historical feature of this specific piece of furniture.


Why does The Chair have 5 buttons? Early versus later productions: In the 70s and early 80s, Gelderland Design marketed the original Jan des Bouvrie swivel armchairs (often referred to by model numbers such as 400 or the closely related 301/302 series) with various cushion types. The more luxurious plush and fabric versions often featured a diamond pattern with 5 buttons for added depth and comfort. Many leather variants and modern reissues (such as the 400 Retro from 2016) have actually been streamlined and feature 4 buttons or even a smooth seat.


Reupholstery in the past: Because these chairs are already about 45 to 50 years old, many examples have been professionally reupholstered in the meantime. At the time, furniture upholsterers sometimes opted for an extra button in the center to better distribute the tension on the thick fabric upholstery.

Finally:
The chair is in excellent condition, but I am not aware that this chair has been reupholstered, and if that has happened at all, it was not by me.
