This exceptional French ceramic table lamp, attributed to Vallauris and dating from circa the 1950s, is a remarkable example of expressive post-war ceramic design.
Its highly sculptural form draws its inspiration from the underwater world. Flowing organic elements reminiscent of octopus tentacles and coral gracefully wrap around the rounded body, creating a dynamic composition full of movement. The richly glazed surface combines deep cobalt blue with vibrant turquoise, green and golden yellow tones, producing luminous reflections that beautifully evoke the colours and shifting light of the sea.
One of the lamp’s most distinctive features is its dual-lighting system. In addition to the main B22 bayonet socket beneath the shade, a second B22 bayonet socket is concealed inside the ceramic body. This internal light illuminates the sculpture from within, allowing light to emerge through the pierced openings and dramatically enhancing the relief, depth and richness of the glaze.
with its generous 23 cm (9.1 in.) diameter, 26 cm (10.2 in.) ceramic body height, and substantial 3 kg (6.6 lbs.) weight, the lamp has an impressive presence even before being illuminated. Unlit, it reads as a sculptural ceramic artwork; once switched on, it becomes a spectacular decorative centerpiece.
The lamp bears an incised signature reading Picard and Aubry, preceded by an initial that remains difficult to identify. Despite research, the maker has not yet been documented with certainty.
A striking sculptural lamp that perfectly embodies the artistic freedom of post-war French ceramics, making it an exceptional statement piece for any refined Mid-Century Modern, Mediterranean or eclectic interior.
