ettore sottsass, co-founder of the memphis group and one of the defining figures of italian postmodern design, created a series of lacquer objects for the japanese manufacturer marutomi in the 1990s. This bowl combines centuries-old urushi lacquer technique with an uncompromisingly archaic, almost sculptural form: a thick-walled, slightly funnel-shaped body in bold lacquer red, resting on a substantial cylindrical base. The underside carries the embossed signature "© e. Sottsass 1997" together with the maker's mark "marutomi, made in japan". A rare example from the late phase of sottsass's career, in which he combined traditional japanese craftsmanship with his unmistakable postmodern visual language.
