Her luminous complexion, carefully modeled features, and finely rendered hair reflect Penczner’s accomplished academic portrait technique. Signed Penczner and dated 1948 at the lower right.

Painted several years before Penczner immigrated to the United States in 1951, the portrait belongs to his rare postwar European period and was likely completed in Germany. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, Penczner painted commissioned portraits in Europe before later settling in Memphis, Tennessee, where he established a respected career as a portrait painter.

Presented in its original period frame with gilt and green detailing. Measures approximately 20 x 24 inches framed. The painting displays widespread age-related craquelure and visible surface cracking throughout, with expected wear to the frame, as shown in the photographs. See less
