Crafted from richly figured rosewood with hand-cut bone inlay, the tabletop depicts a lively pastoral scene filled with shepherds, livestock, village homes, flowering trees, and birds in flight. Compared with many examples of this style, the artwork uses noticeably more color and a more elaborate narrative composition, creating a piece that rewards a closer look each time it is viewed.
One of its most distinctive features is its ingenious construction. Each pair of legs attaches with a single hand-tightened wing nut, allowing the table to be assembled or disassembled in moments without tools. Once assembled, it is impressively rigid and sturdy. I have handled a number of Indian inlay tables over the years and have yet to encounter another with this particular removable-leg design.
That versatility opens up a surprising range of uses. It works beautifully as:
