Josef Burger (1887–1966), Copy after Christian Eduard Boettcher
"Summer Night on the Rhine" / Outdoor Social Scene
Probably an oil print on canvas, after an original painting by Christian Eduard Boettcher (1818–1889)
This large-format work depicts an atmospheric social scene at night and is based on the well-known painting "Summer Night on the Rhine" by Christian Eduard Boettcher. The original was created in 1862 and is considered one of the representative works of Rhine Romanticism and the Düsseldorf School of Painting. It is part of the public museum collection in Cologne.
The version offered here is not an original composition, but a historical copy or reproduction of Boettcher's original. It is attributed to Josef Burger (1887–1966), a Munich artist who became known primarily as a landscape and still-life painter and was a student of Leo Putz. Based on current findings, this is likely not a traditional hand-painted oil painting, but rather an oil print on canvas.
The scene depicts a festive evening or nighttime gathering outdoors: A group of people has gathered beneath a majestic tree, guests seated at set tables, conversing and enjoying the nocturnal atmosphere. In the background, a landscape reminiscent of the Rhineland unfolds, complete with a village, church, and moonlit sky. The composition is characterized by its richly detailed figures, warm lighting, and the romantic sense of depth conveyed by the landscape.
Thanks to its large format and atmospheric effect, the work possesses a strong decorative presence. It is particularly well-suited for classic, formal, or historically inspired interiors and, with its dark, high-gloss frame, creates an impressive spatial effect.
The painting has been professionally cleaned, resulting in clearer colors, enhanced contrast, and greater depth. Furthermore, the stretcher frame has been replaced, ensuring the artwork is conserved and ready to hang.
The artwork is particularly well-suited for classical, formal, or historically inspired interiors. Details
