Designed by Sergio Asti and produced by Poltronova in 1962, the "Zelda" living room set—comprising a three-seater sofa and a pair of armchairs—is one of the finest expressions of Italian Midcentury Modern design. This set embodies a perfect balance between the geometric rigor of interior architecture and a distinct focus on luxurious comfort, representing a true functional sculpture for the living area.
The central element around which the design revolves is the interplay of material and visual contrasts. The supporting structure is crafted from a dark, deep, and prized wood like wenge, and is defined by clean, orthogonal lines and thick vertical uprights that convey a sense of monolithic stability.
Contrasting this rigorous geometric framework is the padding: generous, soft, and enveloping cushions, upholstered in refined orange or tan leather. The cushions are not simply layered on the frame, but appear embedded and protected by the wooden structure, creating a welcoming nest that invites relaxation. The glossy finish of the wood and the natural texture of the leather—destined to acquire a beautiful patina over time—generate a warm, bold, and typically 1960s color palette.
*The Armchairs: They feature a square shape and generous proportions. The armrests integrate the padding directly along the inner edge of the wood, optimizing seating space.
*The Sofa: It develops the same construction philosophy as the armchairs horizontally, offering three spacious seats that foster conviviality while maintaining a striking visual presence.
*The Finishes: The precise stitching and light quilting of the cushions testify to the extremely high level of Poltronova craftsmanship of the time.
Thanks to its strong personality, the "Zelda" living room demonstrates extraordinary furnishing versatility. When placed in a period setting, it fits perfectly with the modernist aesthetic of the period; In a contemporary or minimalist setting, however, it takes on the role of an iconic piece ("statement piece"), capable of lending character and warmth to the entire space.
The sofa measures 210 cm long, 80 cm deep, and 60 cm high, while the armchairs are 80 cm wide, 80 cm deep, and 60 cm high. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
