The pair sits on a shallow oval plinth, the rooster upright with the hen turned inward at his flank. Plumage is cut into the clay in fine incised strokes and picked out in gold and pale ochre against a clear white glaze. Combs and wattles are modelled separately and painted in dry coral red, left unglazed against the gloss of the body. The underside is unglazed buff stoneware, hollowed and impressed with the maker's mark.
The rooster is a signal of dawn and of vigilance in Japan, and stands at the entrance to Shinto shrines. A pair marks a household.
