This beautiful antique Persian Sarouk Feraghan rug, woven around 1880, is an outstanding example of the highly regarded weaving tradition of the Feraghan district. Measuring 4'2" × 6'3", it combines exceptional craftsmanship, refined drawing, and remarkable preservation, making it a highly desirable piece for collectors and connoisseurs of fine antique Persian rugs.
The rug features a warm terracotta field adorned with an elegant arrangement of flowering vines, delicate blossoms, stylized cypress motifs, and finely drawn botanical forms surrounding a distinctive central medallion. A richly detailed midnight-blue floral border beautifully frames the composition, creating a striking contrast while enhancing the rug's sophisticated character.
A particularly desirable feature is the natural abrash throughout the field—the subtle variations in color created by hand-dyed vegetable dyes. This natural color variation is a hallmark of authentic 19th-century Persian weaving and adds depth, warmth, and individuality that cannot be reproduced in later carpets.
The weave is notably fine, displaying crisp drawing and excellent definition throughout the design. The high-grade wool has developed a soft, velvety texture and a beautiful natural patina over nearly a century and a half. Its harmonious palette of terracotta, navy blue, ivory, soft sky blue, olive green, and muted gold gives the rug exceptional decorative appeal.
This rug remains in very good to excellent condition, with a remarkably well-preserved pile and only minimal age-related wear—an exceptional state of preservation for a rug woven around 1880.
