An Exceptional Piece of European Wine & Railway History
Few utilitarian objects survive with both their original hardware and their story intact. This authentic German wine transit crate—crafted during the golden age of the German Empire (circa 1885–1910)—is one of them. Hailing from the world-renowned Mosel wine region, this heavy-duty crate was custom-branded for the prominent Jacob Petry Estate and built for repeated transport through the Mosel wine trade, including the long-distance routes served by the historic Koblenz-Trier railway line.
Unlike common open-top fruit or soda crates, this piece features its original wooden lid secured by sturdy, industrial iron clamping bands and an integrated tensioned metal rigging system—a rare survival designed to secure the lid during transport and customs handling while preserving the crate for repeated use.
Fascinating Provenance & Details:
* Deeply Branded Typography: The side of the crate features crisp, deeply burned German text reading: “Jacob Petry – Weinbau-Weinhandel – Treis Mosel – Bahnstation Karden” (Jacob Petry – Wine Growing & Merchant – Treis, Mosel River – Karden Train Station).
* Authentic Shipping Remnants: The lid bears the stenciled merchant initials "JP" alongside original inventory tracking numbers.
* Historic Paper Fragment: Intact on the lid are fragile, original remnants of a late-19th-century German Imperial customs paper tax stamp (Steuerstempel), featuring historic Gothic Fraktur typography and its characteristic bold border frame.
* Construction & Condition: Substantially constructed from exceptionally thick historic planks, this crate is reinforced with heavy iron bands and structural wooden runners. It features a spectacular, time-earned patina with rich grain detailing, light historical scuffs, and oxidized iron hardware that highlights its century-long journey. The wood is structurally sound, sturdy, and entirely functional.
* Curious Construction Detail: Two of the structural wooden runners display evenly spaced incised graduations resembling measurement marks. Whether these represent reused workshop timbers, original carpenter’s layout marks, or another practical purpose remains unknown, adding a small mystery to the crate’s history.
A Journey Across Continents
This crate almost certainly began its life in Germany’s Mosel wine country, carrying bottles from the Jacob Petry estate through the railway station at Karden before entering the European wine trade.
Decades later, it found its way into the personal collection of a married couple, John and Carole Robert, American teachers who spent almost forty years living in Germany. During those decades they immersed themselves in German culture, taught school, raised their children, traveled extensively, collected regional antiques, and developed a particular appreciation for local Mosel wines.
Following their retirement, they brought their collection home to Pittsburgh’s historic North Side, where each object remained part of the home they lovingly filled together until Carole’s passing in 2025.
Today, after more than a century of faithful service, this remarkable crate begins another chapter with its next steward.
