A wonderfully comfortable country-style armchair and matching ottoman, professionally custom-reupholstered in Josef Frank’s iconic “Aralia” linen for Svenskt Tenn.
The exposed wooden frames are finished in a rich oxblood red. The chair features turned legs and uprights, ball finials, gently scrolled arms, upholstered arm pads, and generously proportioned loose seat and back cushions. The coordinating ottoman repeats the chair’s turned-leg and stretcher construction and is topped with a substantial loose cushion.
Josef Frank designed the exuberant “Aralia” botanical pattern in 1928. Its dramatically scaled flowers and foliage—in rust, green, blue, ochre and brown against a warm cream ground—give this traditionally shaped set an unexpectedly fresh and highly decorative character. The fabric has been thoughtfully placed across the cushions and arm pads to showcase the pattern’s oversized botanical motifs.
The exact maker and production date of the chair and ottoman are unknown. The set appears to be of relatively recent manufacture and may date from the late 20th or early 21st century; it is being listed conservatively as a 21st-century piece rather than represented as vintage.
Photographs of the undersides of both pieces are included to show the wooden frame construction, corner bracing, stretcher construction and woven upholstery webbing.
