A striking example of turn-of-the-century folk art craftsmanship, this circa 1900 hand-painted pyrography wood wall plaque presents a proud Native American chief in profile, rendered with remarkable character and decorative flair. Executed on a substantial circular wood panel, the design combines hand-burned pyrographic detailing with richly applied color, creating a warm, textured surface that beautifully highlights the natural grain of the wood.
The chief is depicted wearing an elaborate feathered headdress adorned with floral accents and flowing ribbons, his dignified profile framed by a boldly patterned circular border. Deep earth tones of burnt sienna, olive green, amber, and black give the piece a wonderfully aged appearance, while the intricate incised and burned lines add depth and visual movement throughout the composition. The decorative border, with its interwoven geometric motifs, reflects the Arts & Crafts era's fascination with handcrafted ornament and indigenous-inspired design.
Measures 14.75 inches wide, 14.75 inches high, and 0.50 inch deep. Lightweight wood construction. Good antique condition with light surface wear and few small paint losses. The photos are taken under bright light condition, the paint will appear darker in low light conditions. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Both sculptural and graphic in its presentation, the plaque possesses a strong visual presence despite its lightweight construction. Whether displayed in a rustic lodge, Western-inspired interior, cabin retreat, or eclectic collection of folk art and Americana, it offers an eye-catching blend of craftsmanship, history, and decorative appeal.
A handsome and highly decorative example of early 20th-century pyrography art, displaying beautifully aged colors and rich hand-worked details.
