The Boro 10 rug by Jan Kath is a striking example of the designer’s contemporary reinterpretation of traditional textile craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese concept of Boro—a centuries-old practice of repairing, layering, and preserving textiles—the design transforms the visual language of aged fabrics into a sophisticated and highly decorative floor covering.
Hand-knotted from a luxurious combination of wool and silk, the rug is distinguished by its rich texture and remarkable sense of depth. Inspired by traditional Japanese Boro textiles, the design is characterized by layered motifs that appear partially revealed, faded, and reconstructed. Through the combination of wool, silk, varying pile heights, and sophisticated finishing techniques, Jan Kath creates a surface with exceptional visual complexity. Depending on the angle of light, elements of the pattern emerge and recede, giving the rug a constantly changing appearance throughout the day.
The subtle palette of soft greys, taupe, ivory, and warm stone tones enhances the rug’s versatility, allowing it to complement both contemporary and traditional interiors. Measuring 250 x 300 cm, it is ideally suited for a living room, lounge, bedroom, or refined commercial setting.
Part of one of Jan Kath’s most celebrated collections, Boro combines traditional craftsmanship with innovative design and has become highly regarded among collectors, architects, and interior designers worldwide. Retaining its original labels and originally retailed at over €11,000, this example represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a significant contemporary design rug from one of Germany’s most influential rug designers.
