A captivating small cabinet portrait of a young boy in 17th-century cavalier dress — plumed hat, flowing hair, and an exquisite lace falling collar over a crimson slashed-sleeve doublet — painted in oval format against a dark draped ground, in the manner of the Dutch court portraitists of the 1630s. Likely a portrait of a young prince.
The oval is presented in a giltwood slip crowned with a cast putti ornament, mounted on a wood panel with Empire-style gilt-metal appliqués at the corners, and backed in red fabric with a brass hanger — the classic Continental cabinet-portrait presentation of the 19th century, made to charm at close range on a boudoir wall, bookshelf, or gallery arrangement.
The age is honest and examined: fine craquelure throughout, a warm ambered natural-resin varnish that fluoresces evenly under UV examination with no apparent overpaint or restoration to the face, and original hand-cut fasteners with oxidation consistent with period assembly. Continental school, 18th/19th century; sourced in France on one of our own buying trips.
A perfect "little jewel" piece — hang it among a grouping of small portraits, prop it on a stack of books in a shelfscape, or give it a narrow wall where its steady gaze can catch guests by surprise.
