A delightful antique oil on copper, English or Continental, early 19th century — a fête champêtre alive with figures in … Read more A delightful antique oil on copper, English or Continental, early 19th century — a fête champêtre alive with figures in Regency dress: ladies in high-waisted white gowns dancing on the lawn, gentlemen in tailcoats, strolling couples, a parasol, even a small dog darting through the party, all beneath towering summer trees with a glimpse of a pavilion beyond.
Painted on a copper panel — the support reserved for fine cabinet pictures, prized for the jewel-like surface it gives — the scene rewards close viewing the way these little pictures were meant to: two dozen figures, each rendered in a few deft strokes, an entire social afternoon in miniature.
Presented in its ornate antique giltwood and gesso frame with layered molding. Examined under UV: aged natural varnish with scattered old retouching, principally in the sky, consistent with a picture of this age; the figures and landscape read original. Honest losses to the frame's gesso, as found — full of character and easily left as-is for the collected look.
