A luminous oil on linen after Aelbert Cuyp's celebrated masterpiece "The Maas at Dordrecht" (c. 1650), the original held by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
The composition is among the most beloved images of the Dutch Golden Age: a stately passage boat crowded with figures rides at anchor in the foreground, the Dutch tricolor streaming from its mast, while a fleet of sailing vessels recedes toward the spires of Dordrecht. Above it all, Cuyp's signature golden light — the warm, honeyed atmosphere that made him the most sought-after Dutch painter among English collectors — breaks through towering clouds.
This vintage copy was executed by an academically trained hand: the reverse bears a hand-inked inscription in Cyrillic identifying the work as a copy after "Albert Cuyp, 'The Maas at Dordrecht'" — pointing to the rigorous master-copy tradition of Eastern European art academies. Sourced in France on one of our own buying trips.
Presented in a handsome gilt frame with beaded and fluted detail. A painting with three countries in its story — Dutch composition, Slavic hand, French provenance — and the kind of glowing, collected look that anchors a study, library, or gallery wall.
