A 19th century Caucasian Karachov area rug from the third quarter of the 1800s — one of the most beautiful and desired sub-types in the entire Kazak collecting world. Karachov Kazak village carpets, woven in the village of Karachov in the South Caucasus, are celebrated among connoisseurs for their bold, large-format geometric designs, their rich and unusual color combinations, and the extraordinary quality of their mountain wool pile.
The Karachov Kazak occupies a special place in the hierarchy of Caucasian tribal rugs — its design vocabulary, combining monumental geometric forms with a sophisticated use of color that places it apart from all other Kazak sub-groups, has earned it the admiration of the most serious collectors in the field. This piece must be experienced in person to fully appreciate the beauty of the weaver's creation — photographs simply cannot capture the depth and luminosity of its naturally dyed surface. Kazak rugs, woven by village artisans in the mountainous region of the South Caucasus — encompassing present-day Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia — are among the most boldly designed and vibrantly colored tribal rugs in the world. Their large-format geometric medallions, brilliant vegetable-dyed palette, and the thick, lustrous pile made from high-altitude mountain wool have made them enduringly sought after by collectors and interior designers who prize authenticity, energy, and the beauty of genuine handcraft.
