This is an old Japanese wooden trough, believed to have been made around the 20th century. It is thought to be a type of feed manger, once used to hold fodder or straw for cattle and horses.
Items of this kind are characteristically made using a technique known as ichiboku-zukuri, in which a single large block of wood is hollowed and carved into shape. While the exact species of wood cannot be identified, it is presumed to be pine, beech, or another type of timber that would have been readily available at the time. After years of use, the surface appears to have been given a thin coating of lacquer or paint, leaving behind a soft, glossy patina that has developed with age.
Among troughs of this type, this piece stands out for its notably large size and commanding presence. What makes it especially remarkable are the rough carving marks left across both the interior and exterior, along with the rugged, exposed cross-sections of the wood. It appears to have been hewn using a traditional tool called a chouna, or hand adze, leaving each surface with distinctive, undulating textures reminiscent of sculptural carving. This is a powerful, expressive form of craftsmanship that no machine could ever replicate.
We recommend using this piece upside down as a low table. The underside is relatively flat, making it perfectly suitable as a tabletop. Its substantial weight also gives it excellent stability once placed, so you can sit on it or place moderately heavy objects on top without concern.
With its rugged, weighty presence, this piece truly embodies the word primitive. Placed as a sofa table or low table within an exposed-concrete space, a minimalist interior, or a wabi-sabi-inspired setting, it will bring an added sense of depth and character to the room. We hope you will enjoy its raw, one-of-a-kind expression as part of your everyday life.
Pieces of this size rarely come onto the market, so we highly recommend taking this opportunity.
