An exceptional antique Japanese Sumida Gawa (Sumidagawa) earthenware lidded vase, dating from the late Meiji to the Taisho period (circa 1890–1920).This distinctive piece features a heavily textured, unglazed terracotta body reminiscent of tree bark. A meticulously hand-sculpted, high-relief moriage dragon wraps dramatically around the center of the vase. The neck, rim, and matching lid showcase a beautiful, glossy dark flambé drip glaze that provides a striking contrast to the matte, rustic texture below. A classic and highly collectible example of Japanese export ceramic art. Equipped with unique dragon-form handles. The vase itself is 10.5" tall.
The lamp has been tested and is fully functional. The electrical wiring, socket, and cord are intact and in working condition. Structurally, the ceramic body and highly raised three-dimensional dragon applications are remarkably clean with no major breaks or structural repairs, retaining their vibrant, tactile folk-art appeal. Mounted securely on a handsome carved wooden presentation base.
Artist cartouche is present, although it is difficult to read since it is largely below the wooden base.
