Born in Hengelo, Holland, Hoowij studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris before emigrating to the United States following World War II. During his career, his work was exhibited in more than 65 museums, including the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie Institute, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
