A striking signed oil on panel by Dutch-American artist Jan Hoowij (1907–1987) depicting the romantic ruins of an ancient classical city, with weathered brick architecture, soaring stone columns, and a distant mountain landscape. Rich earth tones are contrasted with soft blues and greens, creating a timeless Mediterranean atmosphere reminiscent of archaeological sites in Italy or Greece.
Hoowij’s expressive brushwork and painterly handling of light lend the composition both depth and movement, while the original gilt frame beautifully complements the warm palette.
Born in Hengelo, Holland, Hoowij studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris before emigrating to the United States following World War II. Initially recognized as an accomplished portrait painter, he later established himself in California, where his work evolved toward modernism and expressive landscape painting. During his career, his work was exhibited in more than 65 museums, including the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie Institute, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
This painting is an excellent example of Hoowij’s mature style, combining architectural grandeur with an impressionistic sensitivity to atmosphere. It would make a sophisticated addition to a collection of Mid-Century California art, European modernism, or architectural landscapes.
