An exceptional original Abstract Expressionist painting by Rosemary Topp (1939–2004), an accomplished San Francisco Bay Area artist known for her expressive abstract paintings and nationally exhibited work.
Executed in acrylic on Masonite board, this striking composition features bold passages of crimson, cobalt blue, white, and ochre layered with energetic brushwork, gestural marks, and richly textured surfaces. The rigid Masonite support allowed Topp to build expressive layers while maintaining a crisp, durable painting surface favored by many post-war California artists.
A handwritten provenance note affixed to the reverse identifies the work as an original painting by Rosemary Topp of San Francisco, California.
Rosemary Topp received a B.S. in Art and Art Education from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and an M.A. in Painting and Printmaking from San Jose State University. She later served as an Assistant Professor of Art at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California, teaching painting, drawing, watercolor, printmaking, and design.
Throughout her career, Topp exhibited in numerous national and regional exhibitions, including the Society of Washington Printmakers National Exhibition, the Northwest Printmakers International Exhibition, the Seattle Art Pavilion, the Los Angeles Printmaking Society exhibitions, and the San Francisco Art Festival. Her work was also shown at institutions including the U.S. National Museum, Portland Art Museum, and Milwaukee Art Center. She received multiple purchase awards and was a member of Artists Equity Association, San Francisco Women Artists, and the Master Artists Guild.
Today, Rosemary Topp’s work is appreciated for its bold color, expressive energy, and contribution to the post-war Bay Area art scene. This painting is an excellent example of her mature abstract style and would make a wonderful addition to collections of California, Bay Area, and American Abstract Expressionist art.
