Signed and numbered limited edition lithograph by Carl Brenders (Belgian, b. 1937), published by Mill Pond Press, Venice, Florida, in 1992.
Three Rocky Mountain bighorn rams crowd the foreground against a wall of scree and open sky, every strand of fleece and growth ring of horn rendered in Brenders' famously exacting detail. The artist did his field work for this painting at Glacier National Park and set himself an unusual challenge: an alpine scene built almost entirely from brown tones, with a rare expanse of sky to give the sensation of standing above the timberline. The battle-worn horns of the rams were a detail he singled out as a favorite to paint.
Brenders is regarded as one of the world's finest wildlife painters. Trained at the Fine Arts Academy in Antwerp, he illustrated more than 20 volumes of the European series The Secret Life of Animals before turning to fine art, developing his signature mixed media technique of watercolor and gouache. His work has been shown regularly in the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's Birds in Art exhibition and is collected across North America and Europe.
