This Arts & Crafts-style solid oak buffet (or sideboard) was made by J. K. Rishel Company of Williamsport, Pennsylvania (see photo of makers mark in one of the drawers). Along with several other J. K. Rishel pieces, my mother purchased this buffet from an antiques dealer in Kingsland, Georgia during the early 1990s when she collected Arts & Crafts furniture. From Georgia, she moved this buffet to Tennessee, then to Kentucky, and then to New Mexico. Following her death, my father moved back to Kentucky. A year after he died, I moved the buffet to Maryland where I live.
It's a very nice piece of antique furniture that would fit in with virtually any other decor. Like many Arts & Crafts pieces, the simple lines of this buffet goes with just about any other style of furniture. This buffet would make a great piece of antique furniture for someone who wanted to upgrade from Ikea or hand-me-down pieces. Even if you don't have a formal dining room (my Mom didn't either), the open plan design of many homes is helpful in case you wanted put this buffet in a living room or a kitchen. This buffet has 5 drawers including a large one, and a cabinet with 2 latching doors, so it could serve very well as a storage or entertainment unit.
As with many Arts & Crafts-style pieces, some of the surfaces have "tiger oak" veneer, but the piece is made of solid oak. The buffet has brass hardware on the drawers and cabinet doors. A large console is attached to the back of the buffet and features a 9 3/4-inch by 63 1/2-inch mirror. Along the top edge of the console is a groove for displaying plates.
In addition to this antique buffet, I'm also separately listing on Chairish some other pieces of my mom's Arts & Crafts furniture including J. K. Rishel table and chairs, an Oscar Onken & Company writing desk, a tall oak cabinet, and an oak sideboard, so check out my other listings!

It retains its original finish and its original design. My Mom NEVER wanted to have any of her antiques refinished. Instead, she thought that any minor flaw to the piece only added to the overall character of her the piece. Along with her other J. K. Rishel pieces, this buffet was among her most prized possessions. less
