This heavy iron sculpture is a beautiful piece of early 20th-century American decorative metalware. During the 1920s and 1930s, foundries like the Hubley Manufacturing Company of Lancaster, PA, produced highly detailed "sporting dog" doorstops and hearth figurines for country estates and rustic studies. While most were painted in flat colors, this scarcer variation features a rich, lustrous faux-bronze patina, allowing it to blend seamlessly with high-end library or den decor. The distinct two-piece construction with a tight, hand-filed centerline seam is a hallmark of authentic, period iron casting. The low center of gravity and heavy iron core make it perfectly suited to hold open heavy wooden doors. Serves beautifully as a rustic tabletop sculpture, fireplace accent, or office bookend/paperweight. Excellent antique condition, the original metal finish has aged beautifully, exhibiting a warm, deep patina with honest minor surface rub wear, light oxidation, and tiny character marks consistent with a 100-year-old utility object. No cracks, breaks, structural damage, or repairs.
