Oil on wood. Signed. Dimensions: 24 cm x 15 cm. Biographical note: portuguese painter born in caldas da rainha; between 1867 and 1875 he was a student at the lisbon academy of fine arts of vitor bastos, anunciaçao and ma lupi. As one of the founders of the lion group, he was linked to the naturalist movement then generated around silva porto and was a regular presence in the salons of the national society of fine arts (snba). He received the medal of honor (1903) and several first medals from the snba; he was elected its president in 1918. Between 1897 and 1912 he participated in the salon de paris; where he received an honorable mention in 1901 and the legion of honor in 1905. He obtained second medals at the universal exhibition in paris in 1900; at the international exhibitions in berlin (1896) and madrid (1901) and first medals in barcelona (1910) and buenos aires (1910). He received a medal of honor at the international exhibition in rio de janeiro (1908) and panama-pacific (san francisco; 1915). He created historical compositions of a decorative nature for the ajuda palace (1890); the constituent assembly (1891); the lisbon city hall (1899) and the military museum (1907-08). The year after his death, the estado novo inaugurated a museum in his hometown (which, in 1928, had already honored him with a solo exhibition and a statue by costa mota) bearing his name; the only state museum that the regime conceived from scratch. Posthumously, major retrospective exhibitions were dedicated to him; in 1928 (snba) and 1983 (snba and jose malhoa museum). See less
