A 1950s philips hdk series factory pendant light in grey enamel with a cast aluminum top, made in the netherlands. An original vintage piece that spent decades lighting dutch industrial spaces, workshops, production floors and technical facilities, before being restored for contemporary use.
philips, founded in eindhoven in 1891, produced the hdk series as industrial lighting for factories across the netherlands. The form is among the most recognizable of mid-century dutch factory lighting: a deep enamel shade engineered to direct light downward over a work surface, paired with a cast aluminum top housing. The grey enamel is not a later finish. The shade left the philips factory this way, in a muted industrial grey with a clean white interior that distributes light evenly. The pairing of grey enamel below and natural aluminum above is original to the piece, and the philips manufacturer's plate is still present.
the cast aluminum top has been sandblasted to a clean surface. The original heavy transformer has been removed, which reduces the weight considerably without altering the lamp's appearance, and the enamel shade has been cleaned and polished. Each light has been rewired to an e27 socket with approximately 2 m of black cord for hardwiring.
several examples are available. As original vintage objects, each carries its own subtle character and signs of age, which makes them well suited to a series installation across a dining room, bar counter or commercial space.
