The painting is signed and dated (1934-44) bottom right centre and is presented in a period giltwood and hessian covered frame.

this magnificent and vibrant painting vividly captures a tranquil, idyllic scene set by a flowing river amid towering cliffs and lush greenery. hoshizaki kōnosuke was born in odawara, kanagawa prefecture, japan in 1905 and died in 1994 in kanagawa prefecture. He worked primarily as a western-style oil painter (yōga).
he travelled to france in 1928, where he studied literature and oil painting. He subsequently exhibited in paris, including at independent salons and other exhibitions. This painting is from that paris period.
after world war ii, he maintained strong ties with paris and moved between france and japan during his career. He became associated with the influential japanese art group known as the niki-kai.

hoshizaki's work belongs to the tradition of japanese artists who absorbed european modernism while retaining a distinct japanese sensibility. His paintings are generally oil on canvas and often show an interest in symbolic or imaginative themes. His paintings are included in national and private collections worlwide including: la creation (1971), held by the the national museum of modern art, tokyo.
