Dutch furniture design from the 1970s is known for its functional approach and honest use of materials. This rare lounge chair with matching ottoman, designed by John de Haard for Gebroeders Jonkers, is a fine example. Combining solid pine with canvas and metal details, the design has a relaxed appearance with subtle references to the classic safari chair.
Design
The chair is constructed from a solid pine frame with a suspended canvas seat, backrest and armrests. Rather than placing the legs perfectly upright, De Haard angled them slightly, giving the chair a more playful character and a distinctive silhouette. The exposed construction highlights how the chair is assembled, with the canvas straps passing through the frame and secured with black metal fittings.
Loose cushions provide additional comfort while maintaining the open character of the design. The matching ottoman follows the same construction, completing the set. Inspired by the principles of the safari chair, this design replaces the traditional folding construction with a more architectural approach that feels both practical and sculptural.
An identical example is part of the Chair Collection of Delft University of Technology, illustrating the chair's place within Dutch design history.
with its balanced proportions, visible construction and comfortable seating, this lounge chair is a rare example of Dutch modernist furniture. It works equally well in a contemporary interior or alongside a collection of twentieth-century design.
Condition
The chair and ottoman remain in good vintage condition with signs of use consistent with age. The pine has developed a warm patina, and the original canvas shows light wear and minor discolouration. The construction is solid and ready for everyday use. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
