This remarkable standing Burmese Buddha is an antique carved wooden sculpture, covered in red lacquer and gold leaf. Its style, the gentleness of its face, its characteristic hairstyle, and the treatment of its robe place it within the artistic tradition of Mandalay (Myanmar/Burma), dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
The statue rests on its original base bearing an inscription engraved in Burmese script, likely a religious or votive dedication, attesting to its cultic purpose. This detail is particularly sought after, as ancient inscriptions are much rarer than on decorative pieces intended for export.
The wear to the gilding and lacquer, as well as the patina of the wood, lend this work an authentic presence and tell its story. The right hand has an old missing piece, visible in the photographs, but this does not detract from the overall aesthetic quality.
A distinctive sculpture, ideal for an Asian art collection, a wabi-sabi interior, or a display inspired by cabinets of curiosities.
