Signed and numbered limited edition lithograph by Chuck Ren (American, 1941-1995), published by Gray Stone Press, Nashville, in 1991.
"Peacemaker" depicts a lone Plains warrior on an appaloosa, pausing in a fog-laced pine clearing of golden autumn grass. He wears a fringed and beaded hide shirt with ermine drops and a hair-pipe choker, with a quiver of arrows at his side and a shield slung behind him. Ren built his reputation on exactly this kind of image: a single figure, rendered with cinematic light and near-photographic detail, set against a quiet, atmospheric landscape.
Ren's path to Western art was unusual. Born in the Arizona copper mining town of Ajo, he spent the 1970s and early 80s as one of the NFL's most visible illustrators, painting the official 1980 Super Bowl poster and team artwork for all 28 franchises. In 1982 he left commercial work behind, moved to Sedona, and spent the rest of his life painting the Plains Indian, collecting original artifacts and period clothing to keep his work historically accurate. His painting "Mystic Warrior" brought him national acclaim, and the original later set his auction record at $40,700.
Hand signed in pencil lower right. Numbered 1363/2200 in pencil lower left, with the in-plate signature "Ren © 91" in the image. Verso carries the publisher's title stamp and matching edition number. Includes the original Gray Stone Press portfolio folder with gold embossed seal.
