A signed Dutch Impressionist landscape by Jacobus Johannes Doeser (1884–1970), in which a pale sandy track curves from the foreground … Read more A signed Dutch Impressionist landscape by Jacobus Johannes Doeser (1884–1970), in which a pale sandy track curves from the foreground toward a low horizon and a half-hidden cluster of red-roofed farm buildings. Slender trees frame the view on either side under a soft sky of muted pink and grey-blue. The handling is what carries the picture: paint laid on thickly, with pronounced raised impasto and broken, textured strokes through the foliage and foreground that catch the light and give the surface its flickering, almost luminous quality — the touch Doeser is recognized for. The setting is the sandy lowland country he worked in, from the heath and birch woods of Het Gooi near Laren to the wooded dunes south of Haarlem. Best known for his large flower still lifes, Doeser also painted landscapes, seascapes, and portraits, exhibiting with the Amsterdam and Haarlem artists' societies. Signed lower right.
