A peasant woman leans into her butter churn while a small child sits quietly on a chair beside her, the whole interior lit by daylight falling through a multi-paned window. The domestic peasant interior was the defining subject of the Hague School, inherited directly from the great seventeenth-century Dutch tradition of genre painting; where his teacher Jozef Israëls dwelt on hardship, Blommers favored its calmer moments. He trained under Jacob Maris and Israëls, contributed a passage to the Panorama Mesdag in The Hague, and is held today in the Rijksmuseum and in museums from Rotterdam to Boston. Signed lower left.
