This 18th Century Country French Buffet ~ Credenza is a superb example of provincial French craftsmanship, combining graceful styling with exceptional everyday functionality. Hand-crafted from seasoned old-growth hardwoods, it possesses the rich patina and honest character that only more than two centuries of careful use can impart.
Its lower-than-average height makes it remarkably versatile. Originally intended as a practical household buffet, today it serves equally well as a credenza behind a desk, a media console beneath a large flat-screen television, or an elegant storage cabinet in a dining room, living room, or office.
The façade is beautifully balanced with a central bank of three drawers flanked by two generously sized cabinet doors, providing abundant concealed storage. The raised and molded door panels display the refined curves associated with Country French design, while the gracefully undulating apron and carved scroll feet lend the piece a light, elegant appearance despite its substantial construction.
Original forged steel hardware enhances its authentic appeal, including barrel hinges, decorative key guards on the cabinet doors, and distinctive heart-shaped escutcheons adorning each drawer. These heart motifs traditionally symbolized love and fidelity, suggesting the buffet may originally have been commissioned as a wedding gift. Larger turned drawer pulls complete the handsome composition.
As with the finest provincial furniture of the period, the craftsmanship extends beyond the visible surfaces. Even the reverse side reveals hand-hewn construction techniques, reflecting the pride and skill of the artisan who created it. Traditional joinery and solid hardwood construction have allowed this remarkable piece to remain both beautiful and functional for generations.
Rich in history, practical in design, and timeless in character, this authentic Country French buffet will bring warmth, storage, and enduring elegance to both traditional and transitional interiors alike.
