This exceptional three arm solid pewter candelabra represents a rare documented survivor from the golden age of Scandinavian Modernism. Cast in the 1930s during the height of the celebrated Swedish Grace movement this piece is the result of an early prestigious collaboration between the iconic Stockholm design house Svenskt Tenn and the historic foundry Modern Metallkonst. The underside bears remarkably crisp deep struck hallmarks featuring a rare stylized artisan monogram or workshop shield alongside the number 8 anchoring its provenance to a highly limited hand crafted pre war production.
The candelabra features a brilliant dialogue between Baroque revivalism and Art Deco restraint. The sinuous curvilinear arms sweep outward with mathematical symmetry anchored by beautifully cast scrollwork and subtle godronnage detailing at the core. Rather than being a cold mass produced object its tactile weight and specific proportions including the elegant 9.7 cm tapered circular base speak to the high level hand casting techniques practiced by Swedish pewter smiths of the era.
In strict alignment with the most sophisticated contemporary collecting standards this piece is offered in its purest untouched historical state. It has deliberately been withheld from aggressive modern polishing or invasive chemical treatments thereby preserving its magnificent deep velvety century old pewter patina an irreplaceable feature that can take generations to form.As a true testament to its nearly 90 year journey through history the object proudly displays the honest scars of its lifetime. The main structural framework central column and ornate scrolls remain perfectly straight balanced and entirely crack free. The 9.7 cm circular base shows a slight authentic historic warping at the bottom rim meaning it does not sit perfectly flush on flat surfaces which adds to its unique vintage character. Two of the candle nozzles exhibit minor authentic age related ovalization at the rims from past handling. The third nozzle retains a stable historical yellowish resin reinforcement at its inner base a fascinating piece of material history that documents how this object was valued and preserved by its previous custodians.Far from being mere flaws these characteristics differentiate this piece from modern reproductions offering the discerning collector or interior architect an object of immense character poetic authenticity and undeniable historical gravitas.
